Article : Pride and Pre-judice

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE
By Saji Mathew

Pride and prejudice: yes, it’s a reality that everybody is prey to them but, without really realizing.

Many people have experienced the fact that after going through the holy Bible or after attending some prayer and preach gatherings, they gradually feel a sort of lightness in heart followed by peace and tranquility. This is because the pride and prejudice in our mind are consequently wiped out for a while.

Why do disturbing characteristic- emotions and feelings such as egoism, pride, arrogance, self orientation etc.rule our mind?

The reason may be derived from the fact that every individual’s psyche; the inherent ‘I’, sometimes feel that it is great or even worse ,the greatest that eventually leads to megalomania.

One important point to contemplate is that by widening our horizon of thinking, we can to a certain extent escape from pride and prejudice.

It is illustrated in the Holy Scriptures that God will pull down the proud and rich, and will honor and help the humble and the poor!!

Look at the moon, the stars – think about the galaxies that are flying past above light speed - imagine the abundance and the bigness of the canvass that universe is!! What are all the things happening there? What are all the facts and findings yet to be discovered? Is that strike something in your mind?

In comparison with the vastness of the universe and its eternity, where we mortals stand? – How silly and perishable we are!

Then why to be so arrogantly proud about? Why not love each other, why not nurture humanity instead?

Coming back from galaxies, let us concentrate on our predicament on earth. Only a few are wealthy, happy and comfortable here. Rest of the multitudes are miserably clinging on to the life thread.

Millions and millions of stomachs are starving - millions die miserably. Checking these statistics will reveal the astonishingly pitiful conditions of our fellow beings.

Poverty, hunger, deadly diseases like cancer, Aids etc., epidemics and calamities are but, only a few of many disastrous phenomena where we are forced to stand prostrated.

So, please go to your inner self and think for a moment; why to hold on to pride and selfishness still? Instead, why not become some more humane, humble and modest?

We are the most intelligent and able minded of all the species on earth. So why not become good models? Let there not be a situation where we have to hide a second time when God comes calling!!

Let us remember and practice Lord, Jesus’ great saying, "Love your neighbor as yourself” . Let us smile a while and make our heart lighter- let us give a helping hand to our fellow ‘globizens’ when we can afford that - let love, kindness, philanthropy and universal brotherhood dwell in our words and deeds.

That will surely make this earth a better place to live, of course, with love and peace; almost a heaven on earth! – And that will be pleasing to God almighty: Amen….!!!

...End...
