Medical Tourism Industry and Some Important Global Conferences in 2013

Medical Tourism

Medical tourism, also called health tourism and wellness tourism, can be defined as people movement from industrialized nations (especially from the U.S., Canada, Great Britain, Western Europe, Australia, and The Middle East) to less developed areas of the world for undergoing affordable medical, dental, and surgical procedures.

By the year 2022, tourism and healthcare will have become a defining global industry, a WTO report on medical tourism said. Total size of the medical tourism market reportedly reached $100bn as of December 2012. The greatest factors that favor medical tourism are affordability (cost efficiency), availability (wait time ratio), specialization and quality of treatment.

Several companies and organizations are involved in the international medical tourism sector. Some of these active players in the health tourism field are: dedicated medical tourism providers; private and state medical trusts; diagnostics centres and clinics; rehabilitation centres; health resorts; consultancy, service and insurance companies; specialized travel operators; airline representatives; and, flag carriers, private air companies and air ambulances.

Upcoming conferences
